JCPS Begins Early Childhood Education, Busing Close to Its Goal

Jefferson County Public Schools is around ten minutes shy of meeting a busing goal set earlier this month.JCPS Transportation Director Rick Caple previously told WFPL he hoped to have all students home around 5 pm within two weeks from the start of classes. While it’s not there yet, it’s close, he said. Caple said on Monday only 100 students got home after 5 pm, and that is a success.“We’re still trying to reduce that. We’re still a little late leaving some elementary schools. But we’re very close to having all elementary students off the bus by 5:15.”This week JCPS began its early childhood education adding 4,000 students to its transportation list but shaving 40 minutes off last year’s time, said Caple. All 66,000 JCPS students and 960 buses are now on the roads, he said.Busing in JCPS was a closely-watched issue this year after last year’s infamous first day when some students in extreme cases weren’t home until 9 pm.While most buses are on time to school, some routes still need improvement, said Caple. He wouldn’t say which schools were delayed, but he expects to further improve times next week as schools and parents continue getting comfortable with their schedules.
