Woman Charged With Bosnian War Crimes Faces Ky. Hearing

A Croatian woman who had been living in Kentucky and is fighting efforts to be sent to Bosnia to face war crimes will have an extradition hearing November 7.Fifty-two year old Azra Basic appeared before a federal magistrate Monday in Lexington, where she’s been held since her arrest in March. Basic is accused of murder and torture for crimes alleged to have taken place after the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. She had been living for several years in Powell County in eastern Kentucky, where she worked at a nursing home and a nearby food factory. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that the magistrate is considering a motion to have Basic’s extradition petition dismissed. Her attorney claims that the 1901 extradition treaty between the U.S. and Serbia does not apply to modern-day Bosnia-Herzegovina. He also argues that Basic cannot be extradited because she became a U.S. citizen in 2007.(Information for this story also came from the Associated Press)
