Bike Riders Angered by State Fair Parking Policy

A Kentucky State Fair policy that forbids bike riders from bringing their bicycles onto fairgrounds parking areas has many local riders upset.  According to a memo from the Fair Board: "...bicycles are not to be admitted to the grounds but should be chained to the side fences or left at the gate (but not where they might obstruct pedestrians or vehicular traffic). All bicycle owners are to be told that in no way will the Fairgrounds or the Gate personnel be responsible for their bicycles."For some, biking is a primary means of transportation in the city.  For others it may represent a way around the $8.00 parking fee on the fairgrounds, or a way of bypassing the parking lot congestion that comes with high attendance at the Fair. Of note, mobility scooters such as the Jazzy and Rascal, are permitted on State Fairgrounds and buildings.Dave Morse, a founding member of Bicycling for Louisville, has posted a detailed statement at their website, and a Facebook page calling for a boycott of the State Fair has also been created.  James Bruggers has identified fairs in other states (Indiana, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota) where more progressive bike parking policies are in effect.
