Three Coal Miners Rescued from Bell County Mine

Three miners who were trapped in a Bell County coal mine all day yesterday were rescued last night unharmed. The men were working in James River Coal's Jellico #1 Mine when rising flood waters trapped them, blocking the exit.Federal, state and coal company officials were at the scene all day, as teams worked to pump water out from the mine. The water got to a manageable level around 8pm, and the men were able to walk through the water and out of the mine. The Jellico #1 Mine has been cited by federal inspectors 32 times since April. The safety issues inspectors found range from inadequate roof supports to electrical problems.
