IUS Tuition Increase Approved

Tuition will go up at Indiana University Southeast this fall. The school's board of trustees approved higher tuition at all IU campuses across the state today.Costs at IUS will go up 3.3 percent. That exceeds a suggestion from the state's Commission on Higher Education, but vice chancellor Dana Wavle says protests have been minimal."Not so much pushback, but I have heard a lot of concern over the current funding situation," he says. "We've had and we've seen a dramatic reduction in our state appropriation over the last two years and I think the students are very concerned about that."Wavle says the increase is necessary to overcome a $1.7 million cut in state funding in the current and pending budgets, but the blame for higher tuition doesn't fully lie with lawmakers."I can't really question or read into their motives as to why they're doing that. I know they've got budgetary issues that are far bigger than the ones we're dealing with here at the campus level," he says. The increase is smaller in proportion and total amount than the 6 percent increase pending at the University of Louisville.
