Citing a heavy personal workload and family obligations, Jefferson County Democratic Party Chairman Tim Longmeyer will resign in June.Longmeyer will officially step down at the party’s next meeting once the executive committee selects a new chair. He highlighted the elections of Governor Steve Beshear, Congressman John Yarmuth and Mayor Greg Fischer as chief accomplishments by the party under his tenure.“We’ve also been very fortunate in some of these special elections that we’ve held over the years and we’ve increased the Democratic membership on Metro Council," says Longmeyer. "And we’ve really helped provide this community with some great progressive leadership,” he says.Local party members have criticized Longmeyer in the past for not being neutral during tight primary races. Longmeyer says he never used party resources or endorsed a candidate as chairman, but did support candidates he felt were better suited to win their respective general elections.“There have been times that I felt it was necessary to get active and involved in a primary. One instance was obviously President Obama’s primary. I was active early and I am very proud of that support,” he says.In January, Beshear named Longmeyer Personnel Cabinet Secretary, where he previously served as deputy secretary.
