Plum Pretty held off a late charge by St. John's River to win the 137th Kentucky Oaks today at Churchill Downs. Zazu was the third-place finisher. Plum Pretty returned $14.60, $7 and $4.60. St. John’s River paid $13.20 and $7.20 in finishing 2 ½ lengths ahead of Zazu who paid $4 to show. The Churchill Downs crowd was 110,122, the third largest in Oaks Day history.
Rick Howlett was midday host and the host of LPM's weekly talk show, "In Conversation." He was with LPM from 2001-2023 and held many different titles, including Morning Edition host, Assignment Editor and Interim News Director. He died in August 2023. Read a remembrance of Rick here.
