UGA Withholds Prize For Mortenson

The University of Georgia has decided to withhold this year's Delta Prize for Global Understanding for Greg Mortenson until after the dust settles on allegations that he fabricated stories in his books.Several of Mortenson's stories from his book Three Cups of Tea, were called into question recently by 60 Minutes and author Jon Krakauer.  His book is currently under review by his publisher and his charity's questionable amount of support lent to his book promotions is being reviewed by the Montana Attorney General.Betty Jean Craige, director of UGA's Willson Center of Humanities and Arts, told the Athens Banner-Herald "the university is waiting for all the information to come forth and then we will make a decision."A dinner in Mortenson's honor was postponed, and any definitive action regarding the award will await more details on the author's work.Last week, more inaccuracies were unearthed by Outside Online regarding his mountain climbing record.  The article also pointed out flaws in his accounts of how he wandered into the Afghan village of Korphe the first time.Mortenson is still scheduled to receive the Grawemeyer Award for education from the University of Louisville.
