Indiana Committee Drops Arizona-Style Provisions From Immigration Bill

Indiana's proposed immigration bill no longer includes an Arizona-style provision that would allow police to ask the immigration status of people they believe to be in the country illegally. The House Public Policy Committee made several changes Thursday to the bill proposed by Republican Senator Mike Delph. The panel could vote on the measure Friday. The legislation includes tax penalties for businesses that hire illegal immigrations. It would also require the state to calculate the cost of illegal immigration and seek reimbursement from Congress. The revisions are in line with recommendations from Governor Mitch Daniels. Daniels, a Republican, said earlier this week that the bill should focus more on employers and less on law enforcement.(Additional information from the Associated Press)
