The next premiere at the Humana Festival of New American Plays is Thursday night at Actors Theatre. The Edge of Our Bodies is a drama written and directed by veteran playwright Adam Rapp. The one-woman show focuses on a sixteen-year-old girl who leaves her New England prep school and heads into New York to tell her boyfriend she’s pregnant.Rapp, who is in his early forties, says he relished the opportunity to write from the perspective of a teenage girl.“Writing gives you this great excuse to slip into other people’s minds and bodies and I get to be old people and young people and people of different colors and creeds. It’s one of the most exciting things about it.”In addition to plays, Rapp has written novels, scripts for television and he even directed his own screenplay of the movie Winter Passing, which featured Will Ferrell and Ed Harris. Rapp says early in his career, he received advice from a more experienced playwright who helped set him on his current path.“I was very green and I had no idea what it was to be a professional playwright and I had no idea what that path was and I was asking him questions: Where should I go? What should I aspire to? He said, “You should go to the Humana Festival. You need to get to Louisville, because that’s where plays get launched. That’s where careers start.’”Rapp debuted his first Humana Festival play, Finer Noble Gases, in 2002. It went on to an off-Broadway run and earned several awards. Rapp was also nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for drama in 2006.The Edge of Our Bodies opens Thursday night at Actors Theatre.
