Kentucky Homeless Count Is This Week

Volunteers will fan out across Kentucky this week to help count the number of homeless people in the state. The annual count is organized by the Kentucky Housing Corporation.Spokesperson Charla Jackson Peter says it will be held over a 24 hour period starting at midnight Thursday."We get out into the shelter and into the communities where the homeless live, and try to find out characteristics and why they're homeless so that we can get a better grip on the numbers so that we can apply for funding that affects the state," she said. There were just over 6,600 homeless people counted in Kentucky last year. Peter says the number has trended upward over the years, but volunteers are also doing a better job of counting the homeless.
