2010 Census Could Lead To Changes In The Metro Council

Data from the 2010 Census is beginning to be released, and that means legislative districts will have to be redrawn to reflect changes in population.Next year, the Louisville Metro Council will redraw its district map for the first time. Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh says it's likely that more representation may be needed in eastern Jefferson County. That could shift the districts away from the urban core and toward the suburbs and change the racial makeup of the council. But Ward-Pugh says she expects her colleagues to be mindful of such factors."I think that this Metro Council will do its best to maximize the opportunity for African-Americans, Hispanics and other people of color to be elected," she says. "But you can only draw what you can draw."Ward-Pugh says she hopes the council calls in an outside expert to help redraw the district lines. The lines were first drawn with outside help before merger.
