Conway Investigating For-Profit Colleges

Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway is investigating several for-profit colleges operating in the Commonwealth. But, Conway’s not yet ready to name names.To date, Kentucky’s Office of Consumer Protection has issued subpoenas to seven for-profit colleges across the commonwealth. The office wants the schools to produce information on student loans, loan default rates, student recruitment, advertising claims, financial aid and the transferability of course credits.“We’ve received a number of complaints from students who feel like they have been taken advantage of by marketing practices, who were sold an education, who were sold promises that in the end did not turn out to be true," says Conway.But Conway says at this point in the investigation, he cannot say which schools have been subpoenaed. For-profit colleges offering only associate or trade degrees are regulated by the Board of Proprietary Education, but Conway says board oversight is not part of his investigation
