YOU Center Moves To Larger Space

The Youth Opportunities Unlimited Center in Louisville has moved. The center helps 16-to-21-year-olds get their GED and apply for jobs or career training programs. Since 2005, it's been based at the corner of Third and Kentucky streets. Mayor Jerry Abramson announced Monday, the center will now be based at 5th and Broadway."We'd gotten to the point where you're talking five or six hundred," he said. "We were out of space at 3rd and Kentucky. This will comfortably cover 500 to 600 and if we need more space, we've got more floors."Graduate Myra Thomas spoke to students at the new location at the ribbon-cutting Monday."Grab on to it, whatever it is," she said. "Even if it's something you're not interested in. Because you never know who's going to be in that room and who that person is going to be. With this program, I thought I just wanted to be a medication aide in a nursing home, passing drugs. And now I'm a registered nurse here in Norton's on Chestnut in the ICU."The center's one million dollar budget comes from the federal and local governments and the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
