Construction Begins On First 'Parklands" Project

Ground was broken Monday on a new children's recreational facility in southeastern Jefferson County. It's the first major construction for the Parklands of Floyds Fork initiative. The Creekside Playground and Sprayground will be built just south of I-64 at Beckley Station Road and Wibble Creek Road. It's the initial project for the 4,000 acres of greenspace and recreational areas that will be created over the next five years along the Floyd's Fork watershed.Louisville Metro Parks Director Mike Heitz says it has taken just a few years to secure all the property for the Parklands project."We thought it would take 10-15 years for us to be able to have all the land that we needed and to have it contiguous from Shelbyville Road to Bardstown Road--but it is contiguous from Shelbyville Road to Bardstown Road. We were able to do that in a short period of time and that's just hard to believe," he said. The Creekside children's facility is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2011.
