Health Officials Working to Launch Grant-Funded Projects

by Stephanie CrosbyLouisville health officials are working to start programs that were funded through a federal grant announced in March.The Louisville Department for Public Health and Wellness received a stimulus grant for nearly $8-million dollars to fund community health and nutrition programs.Project manager Wendy Carlin says most of the work that has been done since March has been administrative.“The projects are already underway," says Carlin, "People are hiring people, and things are going, just not at a big level yet.”Some of the funded projects include expanded access to breastfeeding consultants for new moms, physical activity and greater accessibility to fresh foods at corner markets.One-point-five million dollars of the grant will go to Jefferson County Public Schools for school nutrition programs.The grant was the topic of Tuesday’s “State of Affairs”.
