Coats Is GOP Nominee For Senate

by Gabe BullardFormer U.S. Senator Dan Coats will again be his party’s nominee to represent Indiana in the upper chamber.Coats beat four other Republicans to win the GOP nomination for the seat currently held by Democrat Evan Bayh.Bayh decided in February not to seek re-election, and the party chose Congressman Brad Ellsworth to run in his place. In his victory speech, Coats said he plans to target Ellsworth's congressional voting record, which he says is too liberal, in the general election."All Hoosiers--and even including those who may have voted for him in the past--all Hoosiers deserve to have a clear choice in November," he said.Coates previously held the Senate seat for nie years. He was appointed to replace Dan Quayle in 1989 and chose not to seek re-election in 1998, and Bayh eventually won the seat.
