Frankfort Prepares for State Capitol Centennial Celebration

from Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeighThe centennial celebration for Kentucky’s historic State Capitol is now just one month away.After a 1904 groundbreaking, and six years of construction, Kentucky’s State Capitol was dedicated in June 1910. The granite and limestone building cost $1.8-million dollars.The historic building’s 100th anniversary is coming up, and a centennial celebration is set for the first weekend of June. Among the dignitaries who plan to attend is former Gov. Martha Layne Collins.“Twenty five years ago, we celebrated the 75th and we certainly did enjoy that," says Collins. "This is the 100th and I’m hoping that everybody’s going to put it on their calendar, that first weekend in June.”Gov. and Mrs. Beshear will host the centennial celebration, including a gala in the Capitol rotunda, at which four murals depicting the Commonwealth’s rich history will be unveiled. Capitol tours, various speakers, entertainment and lots of family-oriented activities are also planned.
