Louisville, Small Cities Honored for Tree Planting Efforts

by Stephanie CrosbyLouisville and a number of suburban cities were honored today for their efforts to plant trees.The small cities of Bellmeade, Anchorage, Watterson Park, Kingsley, Lyndon, Prospect and Strathmoor Manor were named Tree City USA Communities, along with Louisville.Representatives from those cities planted a tree at the Newburg library to mark the designation by the National Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters. Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson says trees are vital for any size community.“They filter the air that we breathe, removing some of the dust, even some of the harmful particles, they moderate our climate, conserve water, provide vital habitats for wildlife, as well as the beauty of the trees that you see that have been with us for many years," says Abramson.Governor Steve Beshear declared April 15th to be Arbor Day in Kentucky, though National Arbor Day is April 30th.
