Progress Continues On 34th Street Renaming

Progress continues in the attempt to rename a section of 34th Street in Louisville in honor of the late Reverend Louis Coleman.A public meeting was held last month on the proposal, and the next step is a public hearing with Metro Planning and Design Services. If the department approves the proposal, it will go to the Metro Council for a vote.Councilwoman Judy Green proposed renaming the street last fall. She says the hearing will likely be in May, and a vote will follow weeks later."I don't suspect that there will be any street change until probably June, maybe July," she says.Green says public opinion on the renaming is split. Opponents say they’re concerned the name change would cause confusion. Supporters say a street should be renamed for Coleman to honor his years of civil rights work.
