Louisville parents and students this weekend will get a preview of the advanced, optional and magnet programs offered by Jefferson County Public Schools. The Showcase of Schools is Friday and Saturday at the Kentucky International Convention Center. Visitors can get information on magnet programs and other options for the next school year.Director of optional, magnet and advanced programs Bernadette Hamilton says the showcase has not been changed by the decision to delay implementation of the assignment plan for middle and high school students."That still has nothing to do with the magnet programs in schools," she says. "They're a separate entity, but the magnet programs and the magnet schools and the optional programs, they add the choices to the school assignment plan."Hamilton says transportation to some optional and magnet programs outside of magnet schools may have to be provided by parents."For the true magnet school where everybody in there is a magnet child transportation is provided automatically," she says. "For the optional programs you will have to provide your own transportation."The showcase runs from 3 PM to 7 PM on Friday and from 10 AM to 3 PM on Saturday. The application period for middle and high schools is November 2 through January 8. For elementary schools, the application period is from February1 through March 1.
