Firefighters To Learn Details Of Tentative Overtime Agreement

Some 800 Louisville firefighters this week will learn the details of a plan to settle their longstanding overtime pay dispute with the Metro Government.Firefighter leadership and government officials came to a tentative agreement last week. Both sides are keeping the details confidential, but Mayor Jerry Abramson says he thinks a deal can be finalized soon. The firefighters are suing the city over a miscalculated formula that resulted in millions of dollars of underpaid overtime wages. An agreement could cost the city 27 million dollars. Abramson says he hasn't ruled out tapping the city's rainy day fund to pay the bill, even though the roughly 60 million dollar fund is used to maintain the city's credit rating for bond issues."We feel confident that we will be able to protect our bond rating in line with the way we would approach the payout of this tentative settlement," he says.A group of 135 firefighters involved in a pension dispute is not part of the agreement.
