Firefighters Stress Simple Home Safety Steps

National Fire Prevention week has begun and Louisville firefighters are trying to get the word out about simple home safety measures.McMahan Fire District Chief Paul Barth says 63 percent of the fire deaths in the U.S. last year were in homes without functioning smoke detectors. And most families wouldn’t know what to do in the event of a home fire."Only about one in four people have a plan and only about 30% of those people practice the plan and that's what bothers us because that's another way you can get out alive," he says. "We're there to help get out the information, but you've got to help us and be a partner in this as well."There have been 16 civilian fire deaths in Louisville this year. There were 5 deaths last year.
