Bellarmine Creates Emergency Response Team

From WFPL's Haley HartBellarmine University has announced the creation of a student-run team to provide emergency medical services. The Bellarmine Emergency Response Team, or BERT, is made up entirely of student volunteers and will be on duty at university events.The team will treat minor injuries and respond to more serious emergencies until Metro EMS arrives.“We’ve got about ten EMTs already trained right now; we’ve got another three in the pipeline for January, and we’re looking to start—we’ve already serviced one event here on campus—we had the Irish Festival on campus last weekend,” said Dr. David Porta, faculty supervisor for the response team.Bellarmine’s response team is one of about 300 university-sponsored emergency medical teams nation-wide.

Rick Howlett was midday host and the host of LPM's weekly talk show, "In Conversation." He was with LPM from 2001-2023 and held many different titles, including Morning Edition host, Assignment Editor and Interim News Director. He died in August 2023. Read a remembrance of Rick here.
