Advances in Breast Cancer Treatment
A small balloon catheter is used to insert a radioactive device into the tumor of a woman with breast cancer. Doctors use the device to deliver radiation therapy directly to her tumor tissue, saving her skin from radiation burns and shortening her treatment from 6 weeks to just 5 days. This kind of advanced treatment, known as brachytherapy or partial breast irradiation, is happening already, right here in town at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center. Elsewhere, other strides are being made in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, and this Tuesday we'll learn about the latest discoveries and what's on the horizon.
