Officials have announced plans for a botanical garden and conservatory to be constructed on the site of an old landfill at the intersection of Frankfort Avenue and River Road. The non-profit group Botanica, Incorporated has launched a fundraising campaign for the project, which it says will cost between $30 million and $40 million.
The 22 acre site is owned by the city, and Mayor Jerry Abramson says lease negotiations are underway with Botanica."We are very hopeful that in the next several months we can complete a memorandum of understanding that will outline the specific terms under which the city will lease that land to Botanica once they meet the goals set out under the memorandum," Abramson said. The lease would also have to be approved by the Metro Council.More information about the project can be found here.
