Education And Crime Among Topics For Yearlings Club Series

The Yearlings Club and the University of Louisville have once more come together to sponsor an issues-oriented community discussion series. The first event will be held on Sunday and focus on public education in Jefferson County. Associate Director of Outreach for the College of Arts and Sciences Reginald Meeks says the goal is to discuss ideas that will improve student performance."How do parents interact with the school board, for instance, is a key question," he says. "And since we're going to have three, maybe even four school board members present, we hope that will generate a great deal of discussion."The October discussion will look at the factors that lead to a disproportionate number of minorities ending up in jail."As we begin to breakdown these elements that are causing this cycle, we believe that we will be able to identify them and then educate the community about them," says Meeks.Later events include a look at the Americana Center and a holiday jazz concert. The series runs through April.
