Louisville Metro Government officials say construction of a new Metro Animal Services adoption center is on track to be completed by the end of the year.The $2.5-million facility is located off Newburg Road, near the Watterson Expressway. Director Gilles Meloche says the current center, built in the 1960s on Manslick Road, isn’t as accessible and was not designed for adoptions.“The facility, as mentioned, was only a facility to take animals, it’s like nobody thought about what will be the outcome of the animals," says Meloche.
Mayor Jerry Abramson says the new location is more convenient for potential animal adopters, and the new building will better facilitate those adoptions.“It’ll be quieter, because they dog rooms have been designed in a way that animals aren’t facing each other in their kennels, which today tends to make them bark a great deal," says Abramson. “It will be more spacious, it will be 10,000 square feet for pet rooms, for interview rooms, for offices and for a laundry.”Abramson says the new building is also in a more accessible location for potential adopters, off Newburg Road near the Watterson Expressway. Construction on the new adoption center began in May.
