Health Officials Preparing for H1N1 Vaccine Release

Louisville health officials are working to deploy a city-wide vaccination program as soon as an H1N1 vaccine is available from the Centers for Disease Control.Department for Public Health and Wellness Director Dr. Adewale Troutman says the CDC is still hoping to hit a target of mid-October to have the vaccine ready. The first round is set to go to schoolchildren, and Troutman says they’ve been working with the Jefferson County School District to devise an efficient plan for distributing the vaccine.“If we get the vaccine in the middle of October, we’ll be ready to go as soon as the vaccine gets here," says Troutman. "We’re in the planning stages now.”Troutman says the vaccine is still in clinical trials, and could end up requiring two separate shots delivered at an interval. He says after schoolchildren, they plan to make the vaccine available to everyone.
