Board Finishes Interviews For Schools Chief

The Kentucky Board of Education says it will make a decision on a new education commissioner later this month.

The board interviewed the four finalists for the job Wednesday in Lexington.

They are: Dennis Cheek, a senior fellow at the Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City; Terry Holiday, who’s superintendent of the Iredell-Statesville school district North Carolina; Catherine Cross Maple, deputy cabinet secretary for the New Mexico Public Education Department; and Michael Sentance, a former official in the U.S. Department of Education. Officials had originally said a new commissioner could be named as early as this week, but now the announcement will likely be made at a July 17 meeting,  to give the board more time for background checks and deliberations.

The board is looking for a successor to Jon Draud, who stepped down in February for health reasons.
