MEGA Cavern Opens Monday

A new tourist attraction opens Monday in Louisville. The former limestone mine under the Louisville Zoo is now called “MEGA Cavern” – and gives visitors a tour of the 100 acre cavern via SUV.Co-owner Jim Lowry hopes it will be a popular spot for school field trips – because it will include lessons in geology, mining and history.“This was the largest civil defense shelter during the Cuban Missle Crisis in 1962," says Lowry. "Believe it or not, there were plans for 50,000 people to live in this facility for an extended period of time. And we have a replica of what that fallout bunker might have looked like back in those days.”MEGA Cavern opens to the public on Monday.

Though he wouldn’t disclose an exact amount, Lowry says the owners of the cavern invested ‘several-million’ dollars to create the attraction.
