Kentucky Could Receive $18.5 Million For Homeless

From Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeighKentucky is expected to receive nearly $19-million in federal stimulus money to help the homeless in the state.A recent point-in-time survey found nearly six-thousand homeless persons in Kentucky, down from 81-hundred last year. But the 24-hour survey was interrupted by the January ice storm and had to be rescheduled in some parts of the state, says Richard McQuady of the Kentucky Housing Corporation.“So, maybe it wasn’t as effective, but please understand, that’s just one day in time as far as trying to measure the number of homeless. And we do that, that’s a requirement of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, in order to receive federal dollars.”Based on last year’s count, the state is eligible for $18.5 million dollars in federal stimulus funds. The money will be used for rental assistance and other rapid re-housing programs for Kentucky’s homeless.
