Daniels To Call Special Budget Session

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels will call a special session for lawmakers to come up with a state budget, after they failed to pass a spending plan before time ran out on the General Assembly Wednesday night.Daniels said Thursday that he would have vetoed the plan that cleared the Senate but died in the House because it contained too much spending at a time when state revenues have taken a big hit. It's not clear yet when the legislature will reconvene, but Daniels says lawmakers should go home and listen to their constituents."All that history will note or remember about this is the result," Daniels said.    "Did Indiana find a way, in the toughest circumstances we've known, to hold it together and protect taxpayers?"The Republican governor dismissed criticisms from Democratic House Speaker Patrick Bauer that blamed the GOP for the budget impasse.
