Two elementary schools in Floyd County, Indiana could face closure and the school system could be redistricted in the coming months.
The New Albany/Floyd County School Corporation created a committee three years ago to consider those options and present recommendations to the superintendent. The committee will present/began presenting those recommendations tonight night at a public meeting at Hazelwood Middle School.
Norma Condra is the co-president of the Parent Teachers Organization at Silver Street Elementary, one of the schools that could be closed because of its age.
“The school is 93-years-old, and it is an older building, but it is also historically significant because of the architecture and it’s place within the history of the neighborhood and New Albany," says Condra.
Condra thinks the closures may be a foregone conclusion.
“I would like to believe they are listening to us, but I’m not sure exactly how much of what will be said with actually impact any formulation of the options that would be submitted to the superintendent and will become part of a recommendation to the school board," Condra says.
Two other public meetings are set for Monday and April 14th. Superintendent Dennis Brooks has said he will take all those into consideration and make his recommendation to the board by the end of June. He was unavailable for comment today.
