New Housing Development Opened Downtown

A new housing development has opened in downtown Louisville.The Metro Housing Authority oversaw the redevelopment of a building at the corner of Broadway and Shelby Street. Authority Chairman Manfred Reid says the dollar project was paid for with a federal grant, and future projects will likely be developed with money from the federal stimulus package."There's a lot that we have to do in terms of quality housing and development in the coming years and yes, the federal government is a partner with the Louisville Metro Housing Authority," he says.The new development has 22 apartments that will house mixed-income families. The Authority is working on more projects that break the previous model of housing hundreds of families in single buildings."The future is not warehousing people in old barracks who are all poor," says Mayor Jerry Abramson. "Mixed-income opportunities in spread-out situations so that you have 25 units here and 4 units there and six units there, that's the future and this is a perfect example."The project cost $3.5 million.
