Community Colleges Prep to Help Laid-Off Workers

Kentucky’s community colleges are receiving renewed attention, as laid-off workers sign up to re-train for another career and others seek to make themselves more competitive in a tight job market.  KCTCS Chancellor Keith Bird says they’ll be offering a new program to help students make career changes.  He says the system is equipped to help train people quickly and get them to work.“We have ready-made, short-term programs that can be accelerated in the areas of health care, energy, transportation, including logistics and construction, also in the whole area of green jobs and environment," says Bird.Bird says the new career transition program will include scholarships as well as targeted career counseling.  He says the system will also be putting federal stimulus dollars to work in creating new training programs.
