More Kentucky Kids Are Homeless

The National Center for Family Homelessness ranked Kentucky 46th among all states in the percentage of children who are homeless.  It cited more than 220,000 Kentucky youth living in poverty, and nearly 30,000 who are homeless.  The center’s definition of homelessness does include a broader range of situations, a definition the Kentucky Housing Corporation’s Davey King says homeless advocates have just adopted here.“And the reason for that is that it sort of takes into account those people who are doubled up, or in precariously housed circumstances, that are very much on the brink of becoming homeless," says King.King says his organization and many of the state’s shelters and other service organizations have seen a spike in the need for help over the past few months.  A statewide, multi-agency council on homelessness is currently working on a ten-year plan to end homelessness.
