Jefferson County Public Schools will reopen Tuesday after nearly a week of closures. Power was out at one point to nearly 70 schools. Most have had their power restored. School spokesman Mike Mulheirn says worried students and staff might still be struggling to return to normal at home. βWe estimate that we have about 20 percent of our students without power, possibly could be displaced living with friends and relatives, etc. That again is 20,000 students, 1200 teachers, and maybe 1500 support staff,β says Mulheirn. So school officials decided to give families another day to return home and discover whether routes to school are passable yet. Mulheirn says the state requires students to make up all the lost storm days. But he says that, considering the number of lost school days this year, he hopes the state legislature will allow more lenience in make-up time.Nearly all Jefferson County Catholic schools will be open Monday.
