There's been quite a bit of talk about how President Barack Obama's administration will renew the country's commitment to science, as well as to the environment, which many feel took a back seat to politics during the Bush administration. And, from the President's address today, it sounds as though that will be more than just talk: "We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age."In fact, on the newly redesigned White House Web site, the words "energy and environment" appear right on the front page, in the section about the President’s agenda.I wonder, however, if anyone else was struck by the combination of these two pledges in one sentence of his speech: "With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat and roll back the specter of a warming planet."I thought global warming might get a bit more attention, but then again, a brand new president has to pack a lot into his inauguration speech.
