Kosovo, Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia - these countries have all been on the receiving end of humanitarian intervention from the United States in recent years. In some people's minds, becoming involved in another nation's unrest for humanitarian reasons seems like a relatively recent course of action. Gary Bass argues otherwise in his book, "Freedom's Battle: The Origins of Humanitarian Intervention." Bass asserts that such intervention arose in the Victorian era and was aided by burgeoning mass media. As global communication evolved, people could receive word of atrocities taking place in other parts of the world - and urge their governments to intervene. Tune in this Thursday when the author joins us for a conversation on the history of humanitarian intervention.
