Merton Remembered On Death Anniversary

It was 40 years ago this week that Thomas Merton died suddenly during a visit to Thailand.Merton, the Kentucky-based Trappist monk who became a best-selling author and social activist, was remembered Wednesday during a brief ceremony in downtown Louisville.Among the participants was Ann Walter from St. William Church, who says Merton would probably be a bit embarrased by the attention he's received since his death."But i think its important because we need people who lead us and challenge us," Walter said.Thomas Merton died in 1968 at the age of 53 from accidental electrocution.(Photo from wikiepedia.org)

Rick Howlett was midday host and the host of LPM's weekly talk show, "In Conversation." He was with LPM from 2001-2023 and held many different titles, including Morning Edition host, Assignment Editor and Interim News Director. He died in August 2023. Read a remembrance of Rick here.
