A one-lane bridge along River Road in eastern Jefferson County has been closed indefiinitely after a state engineer deemed it unsafe for travel.A letter to Louisville Metro Government by state engineer Matt Bullock says the condition of the bridge, which crosses Harrods Creek, has deteriorated since it was last inspected in March.Bullock says he doesn't believe the bridge's side railing or part of its guardrail system could "deflect an errant vehicle." Motorists are being advised to use Wolf Pen Branch Road or Lime Kiln Lane as alternate route. The nearly century old bridge has been the focus of a legal battle between the conservation group River Fields and Metro Government over a city plan to widen it to two lanes.A statment from the mayor's office says Public Works officials are exploring repair options.
