U Of L SGA To Hold Forum On Meal Plans

Some students at the University of Louisville are seeking a way out of their mandatory meal plans set to go into effect next fall. All full-time undergraduates on the Belknap campus will be required to purchase meal plans, starting at $250 per semester. The U of L Student Government Association will hold a meeting Monday at 11:00 AM asking for input on the policy. SGA approved the measure earlier this year, but it has since generated some student complaints. The meal plans are part of U of L’s new food service contract. In exchange, the school will offer expanded dining hours and more food options. Dean of Students Michael Mardis says work on new facilities has begun, and the plan will take effect despite complaints.“This is something that the student leadership has been advocating for, that students have been advocating for," says Mardis. "You back and read past editorials and articles in the student newspaper about the quality of food service and comparing that to other institutions and needing to have that to have a vibrant campus live.”Mardis says students can request to drop their meal plans, but the exact criteria to do so haven’t been determined. Currently, residents students with mandatory plans must prove financial, religious or dietary conflicts to opt out of them
