Officials with Louisville’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program – or LIHEAP – expect more than a thousand people to participate in its pre-registration process. Pre-registration for the program started today.Pre-registration is only for Louisvillians who are disabled or elderly AND are fixed-income – in other words, receiving social security, SSI, pension or black lung benefits. LIHEAP Supervisor Andrew Bates says home heating costs are expected to be higher this year, but it doesn’t change subsidies offered in November and December."It’s going to affect the overall demand for people who will seek assistance, but during the subsidy period, in November and December, it will not affect the amount of assistance they receive," says Bates.Last year, LIHEAP provided assistance to more than nine-thousand families. Starting in January, the program goes into ‘crisis’ phase, helping only people who are facing electricity shutoffs.Locations for LIHEAP Pre-Registration are:
