LG&E Unlikely To Bury Existing Power Lines

Louisville Gas and Electric is unlikely to move any power lines underground in the wake of this week’s windstorm.Sunday’s storm downed 480 utility poles and 8,200 power lines. When asked if LG&E was planning on putting any existing lines underground to prevent damage from winds and falling debris, spokesperson Chip Keeling said no.“If a neighborhood is just being built and they’d like to bury the lines and they include that in the cost of those lots, then we do that as well, too, especially with new neighborhoods," says Keeling. "But usually existing neighborhoods, right now, it’s just too costly.”Keeling says buried lines can sometimes cost ten times more than overhead power.
