The Indiana General Assembly’s interim study committee on immigration issues begins meeting this month. The committee will gather data on illegal immigration in the state and explore ways it can be addressed on the state level.State Representative Scott Pelath is the committee’s co-chair. He says the passions stirred by the illegal immigration issue makes the committee’s job difficult.“I think it needs to be handled not with emotion and not with quick judgments but with a very cautious approach to spending state resources in a matter where it’s not certain we’d be able to have a great deal of impact," says Pelath.Pelath says he’s not sure exactly what the committee will be able to do about illegal immigration since it typically falls under federal law. One of its goals will be to determine the state’s legal options. The panel’s first meeting is September 9th.
