Jefferson County Public Schools
In 2007, after a controversial search process, Dr. Sheldon Berman became superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools, overseeing the education of nearly 100,000 students. His first day on the job was July 2 – three days after a little Supreme Court decision you may have heard about concerning the racial composition in the system’s schools. Berman’s first year on the job has also seen continued scrutiny of JCPS testing results under No Child Left Behind, a struggle with the teachers’ union over non-renewed contracts, and a pat on the back from the school board for a job well done. With Louisville’s students a week in to the new school year, we’ll catch up with Superintendent Berman about the state of Jefferson County Public Schools.
