Walnut Plantation Becomes Newest Addition to Metro Parks

A 98-acre walnut farm in eastern Jefferson County will soon be converted into parkland. Louisville Metro Government joined with the Kentucky Division of Forestry and private donors to purchase the parcel for just under a million dollars.The land includes about three-quarters of a mile of Floyd’s Fork Creek. Metro Parks spokesperson Jason Cissell it’s a parcel of land they’ve wanted for quite some time for the City of Parks initiative."We still have additional land we’d like to acquire," says Cissell. "In fact, we’re wrapping up a master plan out in the forest that’s going to determine where we need to buy additional property out there, so our goal is to acquire as much land as we can over the next few years, in different parts of town so we can provide the same level of park service you have in the more urban areas of town out in those suburban areas."Cissell says the newly acquired walnut farm isn’t yet ready to be used as a park. He says Metro Parks is working with the Division of Forestry to develop a master plan for the land.
