A Louisville Metro Council committee will investigate the disclosure that an estimated 20 million dollars in federal affordable housing grant money has gone unspent by the city. Some of the funds date back to the 1990s, but city housing officials say a significant chunk of it has been set aside for newer projects and can’t be touched yet. They add that they’re confident all the money is safe. The Metro Council’s Accountability and Audit Committee wants to find out why the older money has gone untouched for so long. Chairman Kelly Downard says the panel also wants to insure that the money can still be spent. This is a new committee that first formed in January to investigate the state pension crisis. Downard says he’s already planning for its next investigation.“We’ll probably bring the library in and find out where the master plan is that was supposed to be here in May," he says. "There’s just a lot of questions and that’s what this committee does. It just probes for the other committees.”The committee will begin questioning local and federal housing officials about the grant money next month.
