Demonstrators Rally For Health Care Reform

About thirty people rallied in downtown Louisville today in support of single-payer health care.A single payer system, sometimes referred to as universal health care, involves one not-for-profit provider of health insurance.A group called Physicians for a National Health Program helped organize the rally in front of the Humana building.Doctor Garrett Adams with the group says there could be a role for companies like Humana in a single-payer system if they’re willing to make a financial sacrifice.“Many parts of the country’s health system are models," says Adams. "But the problem is the access and the financing system. The financing system is breaking the country and it needs to be changed.”Humana spokesperson Jim Turner says a public-private partnership is a more effective way to provide health care.“We believe that the government brings a lot to the table," he says. "They do a lot of things well when it comes to health care. We believe private insurance companies like Humana do a lot of things well and to throw out the best of either side would not make a lot of sense.”Thursday's demonstration in Louisville was part of a national day of protest.
